Chapter 3 : Timing and DPS calculation for Killing



What is DPS?

DPS is an abbreviation for "Damage Per Second". A term used in DotA Allstars to refer to the amount of damage that a hero or unit inflicts on an enemy per second.

Calculating DPS
In DotA Allstars each unit and hero has a unique DPS that is not shown. DPS must be calculated manually and is different towards each unit/hero for 3 reasons:
Each Hero has unique Damage Reduction and Magic Reduction
Each unit has varying Auras which will affect the attacker's DPS
Each unit has unique Regeneration which will lessen the DPS
The proper formula for calculating DPS is as shown below:D/T = X
Where D = Damage Inflicted, T = Time Spent Attacking, and X = Damage Per SecondThis means that 99 damage inflicted over 3 seconds results in a DPS average of 33. (99/3 = 33)

In dummies languange, DPS is actually how many damage can you and your team deal to a specific enemy.

In DotA, to kill an enemy, you have to deal a high DPS to him while he cannot actually have the enough hp escapes from you. How to say a high DPS, of course, with godlike item, you may deal high damage to you enemy per second, but before you get your weapon ready, skills are always the most effective weapon for you to deal highest DPS. Hero such as nevermore, lina, lion can deal good DPS. Less than second, them can deal a high DPS can actually get you kill.

Instead just comment on DPS, timing is highly related with DPS. Since most kill are happens more then one second. So stun and slow can actually helps to let you give a finishing combo to enemy. With the correct timing on the stun cast, for example 3sec stun + 5sec stun after the 3sec stun finish, it can actually give you 8sec for giving him damage.

But some of the time, DPS calculation will actually overwrite the timing when the skills damages can actually straight give the hero to a dead.

Example: Although Lion and sven have stun, but most of the time when they meet some agi hero or int hero can actually no need wait for stun timing, since they can actually deal a very high DPS to the hero that can finish less than 3 sec.

Related with this, a lot of players like to wait skills for last hit the kills( so he can famous in game ), but this actually not help in the pro games. As i mentioned, DPS is important, we have to concern about how to deal the highest DPS within second. Wait for last hit skills will actually delay the DPS and cause to fail to kill.

Besides that, ganking style can actually encourage the high DPS since more than 3 players can actually deal high DPS for killing. Solo farming for whole game for your final item to deal high DPS? Answer is imposible since when you play with Pros. So start ganking and learn of the timing and DPS calculation.
